This is the fifth lesson in the Watchdog series of lessons. In this lesson, children learn to be aware of what they say. Just as dogs serve as good detectors, we need to become good “lie detectors.” Recognizing lies can be challenging, as they can take many forms, including white lies, exaggerations, broken promises, withholding information, and flattery, among others. Children strengthen their lie-detecting skills through crafts, activities, and games.
Psalm 34:14 – Types of Lies Coloring and Activity Sheet

Coloring sheets can be a fun and helpful way to teach children important ideas! This coloring sheet focuses on different types of lies that kids should be aware of and try to avoid. While they color, take a moment to chat about each type and encourage them to share examples from their own experiences. Once they’ve finished their art, suggest they take their sheets home and hang them up somewhere special as a reminder to be thoughtful about their words. It’s also a great idea for them to review their Bible verse daily throughout the week. Plus, the coloring sheet can serve as a wonderful tool for prayer or quiet reflection on any untruths they might have shared, helping them seek forgiveness.
“Be a Detective” Activity Sheet

Children assist the dog detective in finding the burglar and solving the mystery of the Bible verse by navigating through a maze. To uncover the Bible verse, they need to write down the letters in the order they follow the path to the burglar and separate these letters into words. For assistance, they can refer to Psalm 34:13. While they work, discuss how dogs detect things mainly through their sense of smell and sound, whereas humans primarily rely on their sense of sight. Inform the children that they will be learning how to be lie detectors today.
Watchdog Search and Find Sheet

Children can sharpen their observation skills by helping a watchdog find a bone. Discuss how dogs mainly use their sense of smell and hearing, while humans rely more on sight. Additionally, it highlights that humans understand right and wrong, allowing them to recognize when they are making mistakes and adjust their behavior accordingly.
Lie Detective Card Game

In this engaging game, each card presents a unique picture of a dog in various situations, accompanied by a brief description of a child’s challenge with honesty. The activity begins when the teacher reads the scenario from the card and shows the corresponding image to the students. This encourages them to explore how the situation develops based on the illustrations.

For instance, the teacher might describe a situation where a child promises to feed the dog and later asks whether they kept that promise. Students can take on the role of “watchdog detectives” by carefully analyzing the associated picture, which depicts a sad dog with an empty bowl. This visual evidence helps them understand that the child did not fulfill their promise.
Once the game concludes, celebrating each student’s participation with a “watchdog lie detective” badge reinforces the value of honesty and serves as a fun reminder to always strive for truthfulness.
“Sniff Out a Lie” Printable Itty Bitty Book

The Itty Bitty Book is a fun and helpful tool for kids to learn about different kinds of lies! Each page introduces a new category of deceit and a colorful picture to make it easier to remember. As children enjoy coloring the pages, it’s an excellent opportunity to chat about each type of lie and what it means. Invite them to share their own examples for every category—it could lead to some interesting conversations!
