Watchdog Bible Lesson 4 – Whining and Complaining – NIV

In the fourth lesson of a five-part series, children are encouraged to recognize the habits of whining and complaining. They learn the importance of avoiding these negative behaviors. Students will reflect on the lesson’s concepts and corresponding Bible verse through fun crafts, coloring sheets, and engaging games. This lesson can be adapted to children from kindergarten through 5th grade.

“No Whining” Coloring Sheet

This fun dog-themed coloring sheet is designed to help kids relate to some tricky situations that might make them want to whine or complain. With bright and cheerful illustrations, it features adorable puppies getting into slightly frustrating antics, each one offering a valuable lesson about patience. At the bottom, there’s a Bible verse from Philippians 2:14 that encourages them to tackle life’s challenges without whining, arguing, or fussing.

Philippians 2:14 Bible Verse Coloring Sheet

This coloring sheet is designed to remind children not to whine or grumble when faced with unpleasant tasks, like taking a bath. The charming image of a somewhat unhappy dog in a tub adds a light-hearted touch to this important lesson. The accompanying Bible verse, “Do everything without grumbling or arguing,” reinforces the message.

Dog Holding Bible Verse Craft

Children will love making this simple yet memorable craft to remind them to memorize their Bible verse. They color the sheet, then glue on a dog face that was created by folding a square face pattern, and then insert the Bible verse on a sticky note into the dog’s mouth.

3D “No More Whining” Dog Craft

This craft is a little more complicated, but with help from the teacher, children will have an adorable 3D dog that will be a great reminder and encouragement to memorize their Bible verses during the week. It can also be used at home as a great visual to show children how much they whine or don’t whine during the week and to improve their behavior. Encourage parents to write what their child is whining about on a sticky note and place it in the dog’s mouth when he or she complains. Take the messages out every night and talk about whining. Tell your child that if he or she makes it a whole day without whining, he or she can place a dog bone in the dog’s mouth instead of the whining messages.

“I Will Not Whine” Itty Bitty Book

This delightful little book, featuring ten pages, is a wonderful reminder for kids to keep their complaints at bay! With its tiny 3″ x 3″ pages, children will have a blast using colored pencils to bring the fun illustrations to life. Plus, it’s super cheap to make, using just two sheets of regular typing paper! This charming book teaches them not to whine when they have to wait, feel hungry, when things don’t go their way, or tackle their homework. It’s a perfect way to spark creativity and positive thinking!

Bible Lesson

The Bible lesson focuses on Matthew 20, especially “The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard.” In this story, when the workers start grumbling about their pay, Jesus kindly reminds them to appreciate what they got—what they agreed to in the first place. This lesson draws a relatable comparison between people who complain and annoying dogs, showing that nobody enjoys the company of negativity.

Kids are encouraged to have an attitude of gratitude and contentment, paying attention to the good things in their lives instead of stressing over what seems unfair or what they don’t have.

“No More Whining’ Watchdog Matching Card Game

Gather your students for a fun matching game that opens the door to talking about whining and complaining! Each card features a unique image and has a matching partner, although they won’t be exactly the same. To kick things off, grab one card to show your students and challenge them to find the matching one with a related image. When they find their match, encourage them to share a situation that might lead someone to whine in that scenario. It’s a great way to spark some thoughtful conversations!

Watchdog Training Board Game

Here’s a fun game to teach your students what they should do instead of whining and complaining in certain situations. As children make their way around the board, they may land on spaces that require them to pick up a card. The teacher reads the situation on the card and asks the student how he or she might address the situation without whining. If a child lands on the dogcatcher’s truck, he has to say the Bible verse, go to the dog pound, and lose his next turn. After losing a turn, he can start anywhere on the board.

Fun Songs for Younger Children

Younger children will love singing songs about not whining and complaining set to familiar tunes such as “Happy Birthday,” “If You’re Happy and You Know It,” and “Deep and Wide.”
